I used Apple Cider Vinegar for 30 days and this is what happened!

I tried (drank and rinsed my hair!) Apple Cider Vinegar for 30 days and documented my overall experience. One product for skin, hair and health, read on to know how to use it and why to use it and which ACV to use. Bringing you “How, Why, What and Which” of Apple Cider Vinegar in a single post.

When they say “Your selfie is 90% your hair” I never use to agree until I noticed that I had the most horrible hair related issues (and split ends, and dandruff and so on! Thanks to Dubai weather!). I was always conscious of my hair (Remember that cringe-worthy ad of Head and Shoulders!) I was frantically searching for a solution to stop this before it was too late. Tried changing my shampoo and conditioner (we will talk about these two in upcoming posts!) I took Hair Supplements (read the blogpost here)

And then lightning strikes and I decided to try Apple Vinegar Cider! I spent hours and days and maybe months reading and researching about it and in the end felt I wish there was Just One Single Post that would give me the basic “What, Why, Which and How” of using ACV. This is when I decided to write this post.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar? (ACV)

You must have heard about Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) lately unless you live on Mars! Just kidding, well these days almost everyone seems to be talking about it. For centuries, vinegar has been used for various household and cooking purposes. It is also an ancient folk remedy, claimed to help with all sorts of health problems. It seems to be the In-Thing these days, from adding it to salads to rinsing hair, from making a facial mask to drinking it (Did I mention that I drink it once or twice a month for detox!)! The list of uses is endless, the possibility of what you can do with it is just unbelievable. So what Is this Apple Cider Vinegar aka ACV? Basically it’s just rotten apples, just kidding (ignore my lame jokes!)

What is Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

WebMD describes Apple cider vinegar as, “Mostly apple juice, but adding yeast turns the fruit sugar into alcohol — this is fermentation. Bacteria turn the alcohol into acetic acid. That’s what gives vinegar its sour taste and strong smell.”

Why use Apple cider vinegar?

Well, I can probably write a book on this and still have reasons left! Let me try to list out the categories where you can probably use ACV:

  • Weight loss
  • Detox
  • Flushes out the toxins
  • Skin (A boon for people with Acne and Oily skin)
  • Hair
  • Gums
  • Cleaning (Yes!)
  • Bath soak
  • Foot Soak
  • Salads

Phew, I promise I can go on and on for this!

Which Apple Cider Vinegar to use?

With so many brands and so many types of ACV present in the market, it is almost impossible to decide which one to go for. Obviously you don’t want to go for something that will give you unsatisfactory results. Look for ACV that is Raw, Organic and Unfiltered, if possible with “Mother” in it. (I found this mother part really funny but it just means that it has those tiny-winy particles still in it.

and finally ‘How’ to use Apple Cider Vinegar?

My personal Experiment with Apple cider Vinegar (for Hair)-

So, here is my experience with it! As you must have figured out by now, I am up for anything that is Natural and Organic, when I started doing my own Research on ACV I was swept off my feet to see the number of uses (and benefits!) it has. It was almost like a Genie in a bottle waiting to be freed and cast his spell on me (Over-dramatic. Blaming it on Bollywood movies.) I realized the maximum time I spent was in deciding which brand to use! Took almost a month to find ACV that was Organic, Natural, Un-distilled, and also had Mother in it. I didn’t want to go blindly with Braggs, even though it has been regarded as the undisputed king of ACV world.

To begin with, I diluted 1 cup of ACV in about 1-litre water. After I had shampooed my hair I lowered my head in the basin and poured it from root to tip. Let the water pass through your hair and wait for the water to drip down. Give it around 5 minutes. Then towel dry as usual. Side by side, I also drank Apple Cider Vinegar every morning for detox and so see if it actually does anything!

Steps to prepare the Hair Rinse:

  1. Mix 1 cup of ACV in 1000ml of water.
  2. Rinse your hair with this after shampooing.
  3. Leave it on for 5 min.
  4. Towel dry your hair.
  5. Hello Beautiful and Healthy Hair!

The first that I noticed was, it smells horrible. For a person who loves to smell good always and makes sure that everything around is smelling good as well, this was a Big Big turn off, although the smell went away after an hour or so. I continued this for 10 days, I noticed there was a noticeable reduction in the split ends, my hair was more manageable. I continued using it for another couple of days.

Steps to prepare Apple Cider Vinegar Drink:

  1. Take a glass of lukewarm water.
  2. Add a teaspoon of honey (preferably organic).
  3. Add a teaspoon of ACV (refer to what’s mentioned in the post on which ACV to buy)
  4. Drink this first thing in the morning at least 30 minutes before eating anything.
  5. Don’t forget to brush your teeth after drinking it as ACV is acidic and can harm the teeth enamel.

Honestly, It does taste horrible and I kept reminding myself that it’s all about developing a taste! I started with half a teaspoon and I also took a gap of 2 days to see if my body reacted normally (Very important, don’t just start a new regime without testing it first and giving your body time to adjust). Somehow I actually got used to that bitter-sour taste and if you ask me now I don’t loathe drinking it as much as I did it initially! (Hurray!)

After 10 days

Observation:

  1. My hair is manageable (coming from a person who struggles with frizzy hair, you got to give it a point!)
  2. Split-ends have reduced a bit.
  3. A slight reduction in dandruff has reduced, not too sure at this point.
  4. Drinking ACV hasn’t helped me with anything so far. I do, however, feel that I am pooing more than usual! Lol (So tempted to insert a Poo-Joke here!)

I kept the bottle in my washroom to make sure I don’t skip this routine and it was easier to remember when I had this Dark bottle staring right in my face! Observation after completing 20 days-

After 20 Days

Observation:

  1. My hair has a subtle shine, which is very unusual for me, I have the frizziest-hair you can imagine!
  2. Hair feels smooth, again Very unusual for my hair!
  3. I feel I am getting used to this pungent smell. Aaarrgggghh. Not sure if this is a plus point!
  4. I am all smiles while writing this but I feel I am breaking out way lesser now! I usually have a pimple or two always on my face (Well! Let’s say most of the times).
  5. Haven’t reduced any weight but my stomach is a little less flabby! (Tell me I am not imagining this!)
  6. I feel really light after drinking it.

I am excited like a kid in a science project, I couldn’t wait for these 30 days to pass. Here’s a confession- I missed my routine twice in the last 30 days! Once, I had to attend a party and washed my hair in a frenzy and once because… well… I just didn’t want to do it! Call it a mood swing. LoL

After 30 Days! (drum rolls please)-

Observation:

  1. By this time I was (almost) immune to this horrible smell! Plus point!
  2. My hair IS NOW Smooth and Shiny.. not a lot much though!
  3. Split ends are reduced and I cannot be happier!
  4. I noticed a significant reduction in hair fall as well as dandruff, not sure if it was because of ACV or just seasonal, I took it as an effect of ACV!
  5. Hair looks more voluminous.
  6. My hair didn’t get greasy easily.
  7. My skin has cleared out a bit.
  8. Somehow, I did actually lose a little weight, like 1 kilo (Though it wasn’t my plan) it might be as this ACV made me poo so much?!
  9. It is not a very drastic change yet my tummy does feel less flabby.
  10. One of the best after-effects of drinking ACV was, it made me feel really energetic and fresh (even without drinking coffee I felt really wide awake!)

I continued my hair rinse routine (Though, I am not drinking the detox drink in the morning as I am focussing on putting on some weight), unbelievably! As I never thought I would rinse my hair with something that smelled so gross, although I must admit I made it a point not to go out immediately after washing my hair! It isn’t easy to smell gross and go out, which means now I wash my hair a day before going somewhere. The results have been better than I thought they would be and that is what got me hooked to Apple Cider Vinegar.

Overall Observation:

  1. My hair feels fresh and the roots don’t get greasy that quickly.
  2. Noticeable reduction in split ends.
  3. Hair looks healthy and voluminous.
  4. Reduction in hair fall (Insert dancing emoji here!)
  5. Not sure if that’s because of ACV but my hair growth is better than before.

After doing this experiment for 30 days, the bottle of ACV has found a permanent place in my washroom. I try to stick to this regime, if not every single time then at least 80% of the times I wash my hair and then rinse it with ACV.

Let me know if you tried this, or if you know any skin/hair care regime that involves Apple Cider Vinegar. Also, I would love to answer if you have any concerns/queries, just shoot it.

Avocados for Skin, Hair & More.

The creamy fruit – affectionately referred to as ‘Nature’s Butter’ or “Butter Fruit” is an excellent source of more than twenty vitamins and minerals! In this post learn about the beauty benefits of Avocados for Skin, Hair & More.

The nutrient dense and creamy fruit – affectionately referred to as ‘nature’s butter’ is an excellent source of over twenty vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B, C, E and K, riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, potassium, lutein, beta-carotene, omega-3 fatty acids and anti-ageing antioxidants! This fruit is much more than Shake and Guacamole!

Avocados for Skin

Avocados are very high in healthy fat, vitamin and antioxidant content, using them as a face mask makes the skin looking softer and younger. You can create a simple – yet very effective – mask by mashing up some avocados and applying straight onto the skin after cleansing but for an even more enriched mask here are some easy and quick recipes!

Few recipes to try out Avocados for Skin:

  • Avocado, Tomato Juice Mask for Pigmentation: You can also mix together tomatoes and avocado to lighten pigmentation on face. Mix half of a ripe avocado and half of a ripe tomato by putting them in a blender. Apply it on to the face and then let it dry out naturally. Wash off. This is a great anti pigmentation face mask for those with oily skin. The acidity in tomato also helps to balance out the richness of avocado.
  • Avocados, Honey & Yogurt for dehydrated skin- Mash up avocado (half of one is more than sufficient) and add to a bowl with some natural yogurt and honey. Mix well and apply to the skin after cleansing. Relax and leave on for approximately 15-20 minutes (or until hardened) before rinsing off with water to reveal a nourished and softer complexion. Repeat it weekly for best results.
  • Avocado and Sugar Scrub– Mash avocado, add 1 cup of sugar (preferably brown sugar) and ¼ cup Olive Oil. Mix them up well with a whisk then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Take a suitable amount in a bowl to the shower with you. Wet your body in the shower then give your skin a good scrub. When rinsing it off, don’t try to scrub off the oily residue that remains! This scrub will not only leave your skin as soft as baby’s butt.
  • Exfoliating Avocado Mask: Mash up ½ a ripe avocado till smooth. Add 1 tbsp ground oatmeal. Mix well then scrub onto your face for 2 minutes. Admire how wonderful your skin looks and feels! You can try this 1-3 times a week.

Avocados for Hair

Did you know avocado can help your hair grow long-er and strong-er? If you didn’t, now you do! With vitamins and minerals such as copper, iron, vitamin A, B6, D, and E, avocado has the ability to deeply nourish the hair follicle and the scalp. The super-food can work to unclog hair follicles. It also stimulates the scalp, giving some of those dormant follicles a chance at new growth.

Recipes to try out Avocados for Hair:

  • Avocado, Onion Juice and Honey to treat Hair Loss: Mash one avocado in a bowl, add juice of 1 onion and two teaspoons of natural honey. Stir the mixture until it is smooth and creamy. Apply the mask onto the scalp, working it down to coat the ends of your hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse off. Shampoo as usual. This mask is very helpful in treating hair loss.
  • Avocado, Honey, Argan oil and Tea tree oil Mask for growth : Mash one ripe avocado in a bowl, add 10 drops of argan oil, two teaspoons of natural honey and two drops of tea tree oil. Stir the mixture until it is smooth and creamy. Apply the mask onto the scalp, then massage gently using your fingertips, working it down to coat the ends of your hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse off. Shampoo as usual. This mask helps in hydrating the hair as well as helps in promoting growth.
  • Avocado, Banana, Honey and Olive oil Mask for dandruff and Hair Loss- One way to put shine and life back into your hair is with a regular avocado hair mask. Adding banana to your hair mask will offer extra shine and essential oils. Mash one ripe banana and a ripe avocado together in a bowl. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and a few drops of an essential oil (optional though) of your choice and mix well. Apply the mixture to your hair and cover with a shower cap for 20 minutes. Rinse then shampoo and condition as usual.

Hair supplements and you. Get all your answers here.

Should I take hair supplement? If Yes, then which Hair Supplement to take? Why shouldn’t I take Hair Supplement? Answers to all these questions and more.

Dietary Supplements can be beneficial to your health — but taking supplements can also involve health risks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have the authority to review dietary supplement products for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed.

www.fda.gov

Hair, Skin, and Nail supplements industry is a booming industry as of today, thanks to the obsession to get a quick fix for The perfect body. Be it hair, skin, nail or body weight, we want it to be perfect without doing much about it. While it’s not completely bad to take supplements but taking it blindly without doing your research can do more harm than good.

What are Health/Dietary supplements?

Health/Dietary supplements include ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, etc. Dietary supplements might be in the form of tablets, capsules, soft-gels, gel-caps, powders, or liquids.

What are Hair supplements?

Supplements that contain ingredients that help in promoting the growth of hair are called Hair Supplements. These might contain antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E, or Coenzyme Q10, biotin, a B-complex vitamin,
fatty acids, etc.

Is there any risk involved in taking supplements?

Yes. Many supplements contain active ingredients that have strong biological effects in the body. This could make them unsafe in some situations and hurt or complicate your health. For example, the following actions could lead to harmful – even life-threatening – consequences.

  • Combining supplements
  • Using supplements with medicines (whether prescription or over-the-counter)
  • Substituting supplements for prescription medicines
  • Taking too much of some supplements, such as vitamin A, vitamin D, or iron.
  • Some supplements can also have unwanted effects before, during, and after surgery. So, be sure to inform your healthcare provider, including your pharmacist about any supplements you are taking.

Does that mean all Hair supplements are a waste of money? Or are there any that might actually be beneficial?

Not really. You need to understand “When to take supplement” and “Which Supplement to take”. Since supplements aren’t regulated by FDA, you need to be very careful while selecting one. These supplements will help only if you are lacking in any of the vitamins related to hair growth.

“But for those with no clear deficiencies, experts say there’s no good evidence that supplements can make a difference.”

www.consumerreports.org

According to Michele Green, M.D., of RealSelf, the ingredients in supplements all work in conjunction with one another to provide the nutrients essential for healthy cell regeneration. “Biotin strengthens the hair and increases its density,” Green says. “Fish oil makes hair and nails shiny and is a great anti-aging supplement, as the omega oils found in fish oil stimulate collagen production and overall appearance of the skin.”

Supplements are amazing—but.. for some people.

Now, what you need to understand is, if supplements were such a cure-all, wouldn’t everyone be taking them? In reality, supplements have been proven to work, but only for people with health concerns that interfere with their ability to absorb nutrients. One supplement might work perfectly for a person but might cause some serious illness to other, when it comes to supplements there is nothing like one-size-fits-all! So, what you need to do is to analyze your health and then select a supplement or consult a doctor before you start taking it.

Remember, supplements aren’t heavily regulated by FDA.

Remember, since supplements aren’t really regulated by FDA, you have to ensure that you know what you are taking. Hence, some inferior quality supplements might contain substances that not listed on the label or have much less or more of an ingredient than promised. For example, in 2008, one brand of multivitamin was found to have 200 times the labeled concentration of selenium.

If I really want to take supplements, how do I select one?

“Shopping for vitamins can be tricky,” Green says. “You want to be sure the label says they’re 100 percent natural and list all-natural ingredients with no synthetic fillers.”

Michele Green, M.D., of RealSelf

Since there’s no evidence that supplements are actively bad for hair, skin, and nails, not to mention the evidence that they’ve helped at least a few people, supplements are probably worth a shot if you’re interested in them. Be a savvy supplement user. Here’s how:

  • When searching for supplements on the internet, use noncommercial sites (e.g. NIH, FDA, USDA) rather than depending on information from sellers.
  • If claims sound too good to be true, they probably are. Be mindful of product claims such as “works better than [a prescription drug],” “totally safe,” or has “no side effects.”
  • Be aware that the term natural doesn’t always means safe.
  • Ask your healthcare provider if the supplement you’re considering would be safe and beneficial for you.
  • Always remember – safety first!

Vitamin E and why is it called the Miracle Oil

A complete guide to cover “What, Why, Where, When and How” of this amazing oil.

A complete guide to cover “What, Why, Where, When and How” of Vitamin E!

What is it-

Vitamin E dissolves in fat. It’s a deficiency, is rare and usually due to an underlying problem with digesting dietary fat rather than from a diet low in vitamin E, can cause nerve problems. The crucial function played by it makes it a vitamin that is poorly understood, but may involve antioxidant functions in cell membranes. It is a nutrient that’s important to vision, reproduction, and the health of your blood, brain and skin.

This miraculous oil also has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants protect your cells against the effects of free radicals — molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals might play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. If you take it for its antioxidant properties, keep in mind that the supplement might not offer the same benefits as naturally occurring antioxidants in food.

Why use it-

Although it is still very debatable but Vitamin E is considered extremely useful. Some people use it for treating and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels including hardening of the arteries, heart attack, chest pain, leg pain due to blocked arteries, and high blood pressure.

Always ensure that you buy good quality and pure vitamin E, bad quality products do more harm than good. You can buy organic vitamin E oil here online.

It is also used for treating diabetes and its complications. Women use it for preventing complications in late pregnancy due to high blood pressure, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), painful periods, menopausal syndrome, hot flashes associated with breast cancer, and breast cysts. It is also an antioxidant. This means it helps to slow down processes that damage cells.

When to use-

Vitamin E’s deficiency is rare but it might happen due to an underlying problem with digesting dietary fat rather than from a diet low in it. You can apply it if you have dry and damaged skin/hair.

Where to use-

It can be taken orally and it can also be applied directly to the Skin/Hair or Nails.

How (to use)-

For Hair:

  1. Mix the contents of 1 vitamin E capsules in 1 tbsp of Organic Olive oil. Massage the mixture onto your scalp using your fingertips in circular motions. Leave it for 30 minutes, wash off.
  2. Mix Vitamin E, Egg Yolk and Organic Coconut Oil (Order the one that I buy and trust here) Massage the scalp. Leave for an hour and then wash off.
  3. Add Aloe Vera gel and Rosehip oil (Order online my trusted brand here) to your vitamin E oil and apply this mixture thrice a week on your hair. Your hair will never look dull and lifeless again.
  4. A hot oil treatment combining coconut oil, almond oil and vitamin E oil is one of the most effective and easiest ways to stop hair fall. Take 2 tablespoons of vitamin E oil, almond oil and coconut oil. Warm it gently and then massage onto your scalp in circular motions so that the oil penetrates into the scalp. Leave it overnight and wash it in the morning. This ritual works wonderfully both to curb hair fall and stimulate hair growth.

For Skin and Nails:

  1. For Dry skin- Massage Vitamin E after cleaning your face at night. Helps in moisturising the skin and hydrates the skin.
  2. For Marks- Aloe Vera with Vitamin E. Use this as a night cream, helps in improving the texture of the skin, also helps in reducing marks.
  3. For Under Eye- Mix almond oil and Vitamin E oil in 1:1 ratio and use this as a cheap and effective substitute for under eye cream.

Important Note-

This oil’s benefits are primarily cosmetic and have limited scientific support. Before using anything new, always consult a doctor or skincare expert.

How to use Neem for Skin and Hair

There is a reason why Neem tree is known as “The Miracle Tree”. Read on to know how to use Neem for Skin and Hair.

How to use Neem for Skin and Hair

While vacationing in India, every time I tried something new (and it worked!) in my mind I was like “I HAVE TO share this with everyone!” I came across some of the most amazing (natural) skin and hair care products that are not only cheap but are also readily available. On my recent trip to India, the land of Ayurveda, I went on a shopping spree for herbs and natural medicines, I bought around 16 (Yes!) different kinds of herbs, I have already started using most of them and can’t wait to share the results with you all.

In this post, I will be talking about Neem, the Miracle Tree, and how to use Neem for Skin and Hair. It’s funny and sad at the same time, how we buy any product that claims to be “All Natural” but we deter away from using the same natural ingredient in its raw form. For instance, since people who have problematic and acne prone skin, always try to use face washes and creams that have Neem in it but ask them when was the last time they tried to use natural Neem leaves.. Well.. I know the answer! The problem I believe is WE ARE JUST LAZY! Sorry for being brutally honest.

I will be doing a separate blog post on “Why I started making my own products?” I am sure once you will read it, you will start doing the same! So, let’s not waste time and get back to our Magical Tree, and how to use Neem for Skin and Hair.

To control acne using Neem Oil:

To use neem oil for acne control, warm a teaspoonful of coconut oil or olive oil and mix in 10 drops of organic cold-pressed neem oil. Apply on the face and wash it off after an hour, or leave it overnight, depending on your tolerance level.

Neem for dandruff control:

Warm a teaspoon of organic cold-pressed neem oil and massage it gently into the scalp. Wash it off after half an hour. Again, if your scalp is very sensitive, neem oil may be diluted with an equal amount of coconut oil to prevent irritation.

Crush a ripe papaya into pulp, add a teaspoon of neem powder to the pulp. Mix until the components combine well. Apply it to your face and neck. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse.

10. Neem + Gram flour + Curd + Rose Water = Removes scars and blemishes

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and mix to make a paste. Apply it all over your face. Leave it to dry and then wash.

Important Note-

Now that we have learnt how to use Neem for Skin and Hair, keep in mind that Neem is a very powerful herb, I remember when I got over-excited and used plain Neem with rosewater and it burned my face so bad! I recommend you use it sparsely, and like I always say, please do a patch test before using anything for the first time. Also, every skin is different and what may work for one might not work for another. Home remedies take time to show their effect, so be patient and consistent.
